The 8 Virtues is a luminous installation that transforms moral philosophy into a field of light.

Originally inspired by the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins, the work turns away from vice and instead reflects on the values that quietly shape how we live together. Drawing from 儒家 values familiar across many Malaysian households, the installation presents eight timeless principles: 忠, 孝, 仁, 爱, 信, 义, 和, 平 — loyalty, filial piety, compassion, love, trust, righteousness, harmony, and peace.

From a distance, the work appears as a soft glowing forest, inviting visitors into a calm and atmospheric environment. As they move closer, the lights begin to reveal hidden forms: each cluster is shaped by the strokes of a Chinese character. Meaning is not immediately announced, but slowly discovered through movement, observation, and reflection.

The installation bridges Christmas and Chinese New Year through shared values of kindness, reunion, giving, and togetherness. What first appears as a magical grove of festive light gradually becomes a cultural meditation on virtue, family, and the invisible principles that connect people across generations.

Built as a modular system of illuminated rods and acrylic bases, The 8 Virtues can be rearranged into different formations, allowing the work to evolve across spaces and seasons. It is not only a festive installation, but a quiet reminder that prosperity is not measured only by abundance, but by how we treat one another.
